Well there must be private servers for it, or they could have released some sort of patch that disables CD key check by themselves...

DakaSha:if you go into a kindergarden and give all the kids rubber schlongs they will prob just hit each other over the head with them
DakaSha:and you have a class of little kids hitting eachother with rubber dongs which must be quite funny (also Picklweasel knight I am)

I don't think they would have released something to disable the cd-key least officially, private servers though that would be a possibility.

Well if they're giving out for free they should've just cancel the server that checks CD keys and null it or something, I mean running that server still costs some money...

True enough but which company holds the rights Viviendi I think, and they are pretty well off, it would seem logical but then again few game companies make the "smart" decision.
