The bad news is, that position was given to someone else a few days after I applied.
The good news is, I just got an email from an executive editor of the local newspaper in response to a cover letter and resume I sent in (edited out a name mentioned):

Anyway, I'm happy, this sounds positive

Apparently you decided not to go for the courier job. You weren't thinking of becoming an Xtreeeeme Bicycle Messenger, were you? I'm pretty sure you have to sign a contract forbidding you to bathe, shave, or cut your hair for as long as you hold the job, and that might have been a little off-putting for Tom.

As for the courier job, they actually wanted me to drive my own car. Since I have a mini-SUV (Honda CRV), and would be covering quite a few miles, I would probably have ended up paying more in gas and vehicle maintenance than I would actually be making
