I just thought I'd have to mention Zangband (and the other Angband variants) here, for they are amazing in their addictive, unforgiving simplicity. I personally play Zangband TK from time to time (although Mordor has currently taken over) - it was featured in PC Gamer UK last year sometime, and the only place I found to download the (now discontinued) TK version (with the user-friendly interface and graphical fixes, but unfortunately no longer being worked on, so later versions of Zangband have more features) was
from HotU (although I could upload the archive I have on DVD, which in fact appears to be the same one, since they've left an irritating character in there. Grrr.)
Zangband itself introduces into the Tolkien-based Angband elements of the Amber series of novels - there are other variants like Cthangband (Lovecraftian) and a Pern version (Ann McCaffrey) available.
