This is one of the first games i ever got (i started playing it when i was like 6) and its still awesome!
anyways, you can get the core contingency files and the absolute annihilation mod online. they both add hundreds of new units to the game without ruining the gameplay or balance so i would recommend checking them out. And if you do want to ruin the game, there's a mod that adds 1500 new units!

Uh, Total Annihilation wasn't ANYTHING like C&C and the Commander is so easy to kill it isn't even funny.
Just get a (ridiculous) amount of energy, then cloak your Commander and overuse the super cannon he carries around on everything which move and you win. Or cloak him and go build a new base just at the doorstep of your ennemy base, then do a fake attack to distract him and keep replenishing your losses with the new base so he won't be able to fight all your units... Or just build a few "big bertha"'s to keep the ennemy at bay then attack him remorsely.
This is even easier on maps which are only metal, so you can build mines anywhere you wish. The Commander build so fast you can basically build new bases in minutes.

Wow, you must have been playing with idiots.
Seriously, online with good players WASN'T ANYTHING like C&C.
Transport Commander Kidnappings (using a transport to pick up an enemy commander), Cloak Luring (very popular tactic, have an enemy cloak his commander, then wait for him to attack, use your radars and jammers to pick him up then take a transport, pick up the enemy commander and use your commander to blow it up right before it lands) , Soaking (make a massive collection of metal collectors on a metal map, then keep building Pee-Wees or Fighters and put the waypoint in the enemy base, continously build units over and over) Jacking (Build a bunch of radar jammers all over the enemy's borders, then let him create a massive army while you build a ring of turrets right around his base) stuff like that, although TA newbies thought you could just win by massing units, it was a big misconception when you played online.
In fact, it isn't even like C&C if you just play it normally, C&C didn't have infinite resources, it didn't have such a high quantity of units, it didn't have ships, or airplanes, it didn't even play the same. They're such different games it doesn't make any sense.
