Hi everybody!

First excuse my bad english - last time I wrote an english text was six years ago in school... whistling.gif

Second, I would like to congratulate you on your amazing site. I've found a lot of treasures on abandonia. Thank you for that. And today it's time to give you something back (if you like it of course).

I'd like to recommend a really top role playing game: Helherron

It is a freeware game (meaning no problems with copyright) and it is comparable with the old Ultima games or Nahlakh.

Its features:

Some features:

* DirectX 7 required. Recommended system: P233MMX, 64MB RAM, Win95 or better. To play the Linux version, you need X. Currently there is only i386 binary version available for Linux.
* Huge world (8 towns, 100+ dungeons). Simply put: Helherron is not a one night game.
* 9 character classes, 9 races
* Experience/level character development system.
* Over 500 different enemies/NPCs.
* Over 130 spells.
* Versatile item system plus a lot of unique artefacts.
* Bloody and brutal battles.
* AND IT'S ALL FREE

(the features I took from the Homepage wink.gif )

It is a real challenging game and I love it. Here some screen-shots:

RPG fans will love this game, of that I'm sure!

Greetings, Tician

When i played this game the first time I started at 6 o'clock in the evening... the next time i watched on my clock it was 4 o'clock in the morning...  :ok:

I played many RPG Games in my life, but only few can compete with Helherron.

One of the things I like most: in battles you can aim at different body parts of your enemies. That's a cool feature I think. But the best thing: it's  a real hard game to finish. Sometimes you will fight against about 20 enemies... and such a fight will not be finished in a minute or two, then you have to pull out all the stops.

Dl'd and tried, and I don't have opinion yet. There's something in the graphics that is sooooo disturbing, which I find surprising, because I usually think graphics is the least important. Perhaps it doesn't just work for me. But, I'm going to give it a serious try - who knows, perhaps I'm late at work tomorrow! :ok:

Hmm... I spent this day playing this and I have to admit it has potential, but damn it seems to be difficult in the beginning... I'm at the Dwarven Temple and getting seriously beated up. And if I go to wilderness bandits will beat me... :ok: Guess I'll just have to try to get rid of those undeads!

You are right. The Game is really difficult, but I like that. The bandits in the wilderness are tough opponents. Most dungeon fights aren't that hard. But this problem will  get better with time.

Helherron isn't the ideal RPG to start with. People who are new to the RPG genre could be frustrated after some lost battles. For those: SAVE A LOT, especially after a succesful fight. Ressurection isn't cheap in town, and the spell (the prayer) is difficult to cast, and you won't get it at the beginning of the game.

I'm no rookie of this genre and I'm having very hard time bashing those undeads. I've been wondering if my party combination is poor, but it seems quite classic - which proves of course nothing.

Did you change the battle tactics of your chars? With Shift+t you can change it. Your warriors will hit harder, and your mages, priests, etc... will not get hurt that easy and/or hard.

For example: I play with a Golem Barbarian with the most aggressive setting. If the golem hits a creature one time, it's dead.

Golems are way too slow to my taste. Good ranged units tend to take them out before getting close. I do use different tactics, but for example my Troll fighters get some serious damage when their tactics are at aggressive and thus they die. Next time I guess I'll try 4 mages, 2 fighters and 2 clerics! :ok:

At first I didn't really like the game, but I had those feelings with a lot of other games which I then later enjoyed.

The game is a bit confusing at first but it does get better the more you play it, took me three goes to get a party strong enough to get to the 2nd Level of the Goblin Caves, though they couldn't get far in the 3rd Level (new party much more succesfull).

The graphics aren't amazing but as ADoM has shown, graphics are not everything, sound is ok nothing special. The combat system though is quite good and very fun. It's great when you get your golem to smash an enemy into another enemy or squash them using a handily placed wall, graphics are nice in combat but sometimes they tend to cover up a lot, its hard to see a grid bug on the same tile as a grid bug corpse, nice seeing the blood splash though, and when you get shot with arrows or hit (or the blood mulched on a wall).

Spell system works nicely, quite a fair number of spells at your disposal and quite useful, can't really see much of the difference between prayers and magic (they both use MP i believe).

Golems are fun to have but they are very slow, though they make amazing mules as they can carry so much, trolls are much faster though and are much harder to hit when compared with golems. Golems can throw stuff though, quite lethally as well which can make up for the shoddy movement.

Apart from as merchants though I think elves really suck, for some reason they have terrible willpower which means that they don't make as good mages or priests, they aren't amazingly strong to be good front range fighters and halflings make much better archers, but elves are nicely suited as merchants as it fills a nice role and they are good archers still and basically the merchant is the person who gets all the wands.

Halfling archers are good as they are very accurate and deadly with bows/crossbows but they don't have the best perception which is one of the elves saving graces. The lack of perception though is evened out by a nice light prayer by a monk or priest, however I learnt out the hardway that the light spell works both ways and those goblin priests are nasty in hordes.

The game is quite fun and well worth the download in my opinion, could do with a better storyline and easier interface but its still great to play.
